A trip to Cornwall wouldn’t be complete without at least one garden walk, the perfect way to immerse yourself in the region’s wild nature and stunning coastline. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a weekend wanderer, or simply someone who appreciates beautiful flowers, May is the perfect time to visit. Flowers are in bloom and the summer crowds are yet to arrive.
Cornwall’s variety of beautiful gardens are brimming with colour, charm, and character, spanning from subtropical valleys along the south coast near Falmouth, to cliffside retreats along the rugged north coast.
On a recent visit, I explored three of South Cornwall’s most iconic green spaces, including Trebah Garden, Glendurgan Garden and Trelissick Garden. Each was truly unique and offered something different, from exotic planting to playful mazes, coastal views and historic estates. Along with charming cafes and gift shops stocking sustainable gifts, greeting cards, floral homewares and treasures from many independent brands.
Why Visit Cornwall Gardens in Spring?
Spring is when Cornwall’s gardens truly come alive. Flowers are in full bloom, from woodlands of bluebells to towering rhododendrons and vibrant hydrangeas. Its mild weather makes it the perfect time for walking and exploring. With more to offer than beautiful plants, they are great day-out destinations, with scenic trails and delicious cafes.
1. Trebah Garden – A Subtropical Haven by the Sea
Nestled in a sheltered valley near Falmouth, Trebah Garden is a 26-acre subtropical paradise. The garden cascades down towards the delightful Helford River, finishing at a small private beach that feels like a hidden treasure. May is a particularly magical time to visit as the hydrangeas start to bloom and the valley fills with colour, while the bamboo and palm trees create a jungle-like atmosphere.
Wandering through the paths of Trebah is like stepping into another world, made by its exotic plants, tranquil pools and thriving wildlife amongst the greenery.
The cafe is a lovely place to sit, indoors and out, along with its shop filled with floral-themed gifts, homeware and unique illustrated greetings cards.
2. Glendurgan Garden – Family Fun with a Historic Twist
Just a short walk from Trebah, Glendurgan Garden offers a completely different yet equally enchanting experience. This National Trust property is best known for its historic maze, planted in 1833 and still delighting children and adults alike with its winding, green hedges.
The garden follows a steep valley down towards the little village of Durgan, where you can pick up an ice cream and enjoy the coastal view. Its sense of discovery makes it so special, with banks of flowers, ancient trees, and exotic shrubs, amongst rope swings and plenty of benches for soaking it all in. Stop for lunch at their charming cafe or finish your visit with a delicious Cornish treat.
3. Trelissick Garden – Elegance Meets River Views
Located on a sweeping peninsula near Truro, Trelissick Garden is a serene escape also managed by the National Trust. Unlike the jungle-like feel of Trebah and the playfulness of Glendurgan, Trelissick offers a more formal approach of refined planting, open lawns and beautiful views over the River Fal.
It is beautifully maintained with structured borders full of seasonal flowers, rhododendrons, azaleas and topiary. Its woodland walk leads you to enchanting huts and riverside lookouts offering perfect spots to stop and enjoy the view. At the heart of the garden is a Georgian house, surrounded by stables, adding a sense of grandeur and history to the space.
Trelissick also shines when it comes to its gift shop – a wonderful place to browse homeware, garden accessories, local souvenirs along with unique greeting cards and floral gifts.
